PROJECT BRIEF

to concept a design for a chair

  • form is to be sculptural-inspired or futuristic.

  • entire chair is to be made of only wood (but joining parts can be made of metal, eg screws, brackets)

  • furniture has to be manufactured and assembled with ease.

  • keep each part within the given dimensions of 500mm x 500mm x 500mm

development process

I decided to go with a sculptural-inspired theme while coming up with the first few ideas.

1 was inspired by the Sphinx statue while 2 and 3 were inspired by the form of the butterfly.

3 was more inspired by the Art Nouveau movement.

After being encouraged to go for designs inspired by the Art Nouveau movement, I was deciding on how I would make it easily assembled.

Pieces would most likely need to be carved or cut out.

I had originally wanted the top piece to be made by steam-bending.

However, it proved hard to keep the whole top piece within the dimensions of 500mm x 500mm x 500mm.

Pieces were eventually split into a total of 7 pieces.

All parts fitted within the 500mm dimension requirements.
